Abode Smart Hub & Security System
Abode Smart Home Hub & Security System is a smart home hub and sensor manufacture that operates on the Z-Wave network and is compatible with many 3rd party products from companies such as Ecobee, Kwikset, Aeotec, Phillips Hue, Kwikset and many more. To see what products it works with, go here.
The system is available as a gateway that connects to your router via ethernet as well as a version called Iota that includes a built-in camera and can connect wirelessly making it perfect for your entryway. Both versions come with a door sensor and key fob. They can be expanded to include additional door and window sensors, motion detectors, keypads, smoke and water detectors.
Setup out of the box is straightforward, after connecting the main hub you’re able to log onto an app or visit their website to add additional sensors and start building your own automation.
Self-monitoring and mobile notifications are included free with the system, you can upgrade to a month to month professional monitoring that has cellular and battery backup in case of emergency. Abode is the only company that offers short term professional monitoring on demand for as little as 7 days at a time which is perfect if you’re out of town on vacation.
There are a number of different integrations with 3rd party vendors including locks, lights, switches, various sensors, cameras, and of course your favorite voice assistant. During testing of the gateway, I was able to set up automation to automatically turn on a light when I got home, lock the door when the security system is armed, and turn off the water main if a leak is detected. This is all accomplished with the Cue automation platform online, it can even be set up to only trigger an action if certain criteria have been met such as time of day or if you’re home.
Compared to other DIY security systems, we really liked that we could integrate with other devices and that the system is able to run in the background without requiring us to arm or disarm. You’re able to create a geo-fence around your home that when used with the mobile app lets the system know if you’re home or not.
I would recommend this system for anyone that is considering a DIY home security system and is also interested in doing additional home automation.
